Audience analysis/rhetorical

Looking more in-depth at rhetorical/audience analysis:
My class just put together persuasive speeches on men in the Renaissance era and their assignment was to persuade me why their guy was the greatest and deserved the most respect. While teaching the art of persuasion my biggest resource was the media- especially commercials. I was able to show my students how they used words, actions and non-verbals to grab our attention and get thinking about their product. We were able to analyze magazine ads, commercials, and newspaper ads and find similarities between all of them. We also came to conclusions as to what languages, actions or signs worked the best.

Week 3: Film techniques
Film Assignment
The past three weeks have been filled with new ideas about media that I can incorporate into my classroom. I find myself becoming overwhelmed with the amount of thoughts I have about how I am going to creatively integrate media into my curriculum. Thoughts upon thoughts fill my head; some good, some not so good. When this assignment was laid out before me, I was taken by surprise. This teaching method had never come to mind but I absolutely love and cant wait to try it in my classroom.
I choose to use a segment from Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? produced by the Coen brothers. I have chosen this film because in my 10th grade English class we explore Greek mythology by reading The Odyssey. The Coen brothers created their movie based off of aspects of The Odyssey. This film is a masterpiece and in my opinion has been written with creativity and pizzazz.
The scene starts out with the 3 main characters on stage. They are at disguised with beards on because they have escaped from jail and are wanted. They start singing a song they have recently recorded and it is a big hit. The whole crowd gets on their feet and they start to clap and cheer. The men start singing and dancing and are a big hit.
So what will I do with the film clip? The main objective for using the clip of The Soggy Bottom Boys singing is because that song is a representation of Odysseus life. After reading the novel and watching Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? I will show my students the clip of this song and have them discuss the song in relation to the book and the movie. Does it follow suit? What are the similarities between Odysseus journey and Ulyssess journey? I will then bring in the aspect of poetry and how most songs start as a poem. We will study elements of a poem and also talk about how The Odyssey started as a 10,000 line poem and eventually was translated.
The final outcome of this video analysis will be for my students to create their own song (poem) and video production based around The Odyssey. They will focus on a character, theme, or journey and will construct a song related to their choice. They will have to create a music video- using homemade instruments, real instruments or anything they can get their hands on. From here, we will move onto the aspects of creating a video and what makes a good video. Lighting, sound and changes in shot will be the three areas that I will focus on.
Commercial Assignment
I have also chosen a commercial from the super bowl. I thought this commercial was controversial but also funny. This could be used in a variety of ways in my class.
Snickers Mechanical Kiss - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjuXbYW6KmE
Shot 1:
Long shot camera angle, Eye level, Average duration
Two men working on a red car. The hood of the car is open and they are leaning over the motor. Mechanical sounds being played in the background establishing they are in a car shop setting. Men are dressed in ragged clothes and they are not groomed.
Shot 2:
Close up camera angle, Low angle, Subliminal duration
Close up of one of the first man. He pulls a snickers bar out of his shirt pocket as he is leaning over the hood of the car. The man rips open the snicker bar and it makes a tearing noise.
Shot 3:
Medium shot camera angle, Eye level, Subliminal duration
Man bites the open end of the snicker bar and pulls the remainder of the wrapper off of the snickers. Second man continues to work.
Shot 4:
Close up camera angle, Eye level, Subliminal duration
Second man looks over and sees the snicker bar hanging out of the other mans mouth. He eyes the snicker bar and is obviously attracted to it.
Shot 5:
Close up camera angle, Eye level, Average duration
Second man leans in and starts eating the opposite end of the bar. Both of the men are biting at the snickers and eventually end up with their lips pressed together. Both men have their eyes closed and they lock lips for a split second. At once, they both open their eyes and realized they have just kissed.
Shot 6:
Medium shot camera angle, Eye level, Average duration
They immediately take a step back. It is silent and both men continue chewing on the snickers. There is no eye contact between the two men. The second man says, I think we just accidentally kissed.
Shot 7:
Medium shot camera angle, Eye level, Subliminal duration
First man says, Quick, do something manly. Camera focuses in on him at this point.
Shot 8:
Medium shot camera angle, Eye level, Average duration
Second man rips open his shirt and tears his chest hair off of his chest. Second man follows right along and is only a half a second behind ripping his chest hair out. They both begin to scream and yell as the after affect takes place. They are both holding the chunk of hair in their hands and their eyes are closed.
Shot 9:
Medium shot camera angle, Eye level, Subliminal duration
Screaming and yelling are still continuing but it switches views. It shows the second man looking at the first man and he makes a face like, what did we just do?
Shot 10:
Medium shot camera angle, Eye level, Average duration
View of the inside of a snickers bar shows up in the middle of the screen. It says Snickers- Most Satisfying. The men are still screaming. The commercial cuts out.
